Period Dignity Gambia

Binti International has proudly launched our office in The Gambia this year. We have also set up a partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to include our Binti Menstrual education as part of the curriculum, nationwide!
It is a ground-breaking initiative to deliver knowledge and start eradicating period stigma. Helping to power the initiative, is Africa's fastest growing telecoms provider, Africell.

End period stigma

Our objective is to empower the next generation of Gambians with Binti’s 360-level award winning bespoke menstrual and puberty education. On average, girls in The Gambia miss 48 days of school annually with the majority of them unable to catch up in class and fall far behind the boys. The education we provide will enable girls to understand their bodies and manage their menstrual cycles with confidence. Girls as young as 8 start to bleed every month for 4 decades of their lives and most have to learn on the job which is exhausting and often shrouded with stigma, taboo and shame. This can have some devastating affects growing up and impact their menstrual health negatively. The boys will also be taught about their puberty whilst encouraging an empathetic understanding of menstrual health and respect for the girls around them.

THE TRAINING & DELIVERY

The programme will be delivered over 3 years and reach each of the 6 regions in The Gambia. The project will be led by founder of Binti International, Manjit K. Gill who will begin the training of the teachers first. We believe that you cannot teach others if you haven’t removed or addressed your own stigmas yourself. These teachers will then carry the training forward and into each of their schools and provide a legacy programme to continue to train others in the same way, to effectively deliver the best education for students.
